Projects
The Human Rights Financial Defense Committee
Presently establishing a network of legal and financial advisors in the offshore community that will set up accounts utilizing bank secrecy to enable “material support” for democratic movements and human rights organizations worldwide. Bank secrecy provides a practical means for defending human rights, including economic rights, and civil liberties. We will specifically address situations in which financial privacy is threatened as well as other systematic threats to individual property rights more generally. Our Offshore defense advisory board will play a key role in this area by providing logistical direction for the execution of these projects.
FinCEN Watch
The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) is a bureau under the U.S. Treasury that is the inter-agency nexus of our anti-money laundering policies. Currently no privacy group regularly monitors this organization.
FATF Watch
The Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is a sister organization of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and fancies itself the anti-money laundering policy-making body for developed countries. Currently no privacy group regularly monitors this organization.
Coalition for the Unbanked
This project will address the lack of access to financial services of the “unbanked” especially in light of the post-September 11th, 2001 anti-money laundering laws. The unbanked are those without established formal relationships with financial institutions. Some estimates put the unbanked at nearly one-fifth of the people in the United States. They are disproportionately poor, minority and especially immigrant. In the immigrant communities many people may come from cultures with good reason to be suspicious of banks. Since the marginal returns for most institutions for the unbanked are very small, the significant increase in the regulatory burden–especially for the immigrant populations–renders these markets unprofitable; therefore, the formal financial sector increasingly cuts off services to those who need them most.
Coalition for Sound Money
Free Labor
Idea for the project would be to broach the union/right-to-work divide and focus on the principles of contractualism and freedom of association. The aim would be to promote a positive agenda that actually corresponds to today’s workplace (with a libertarian perspective). Many labor regulations at the federal level restrict our individual rights of freedom of association and liberty of contract. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the Lochner decision but then consistently disagree with many of our current regulations. (also immigration).
Civil liberties in wartime in America
Financial privacy coalition
Establish, maintain and lead a coalition of groups on an on-going basis on contemporary financial privacy issues. The financial privacy coalition will be an ongoing project offering a permanent site to organize around various contemporary issues. The spirit of the transpartisan approach enables activists of the left, right and libertarian persuasions to come together on areas of interest.
